Whinging Aloud – Episode 240

After nearly a month off our regular schedule, we’re back and packed with some more juicy content. This week we review the grimy sapphic crime thriller Love Lies Bleeding, the violet directorial debut of Dev Patel in Monkey Man, and Sam chats about Capcom’s much anticipated RPG sequel Dragon’s Dogma 2 and… the 1999 action thriller The Boondock Saints (for some reason). Elsewhere on the show, we talk news and recent trailers, including the ongoing clownshow that is “Gamergate 2.0” and it’s complaints of “forced diversity”, as well as Blizzard’s continued struggle to redeem Overwatch 2, and so much more (maybe)!

Regurgitator – Episode 46: Road House

After a 2 year hiatus, we’re back this week with Regurgitator! Specifically, we’re looking back at the original 1989 schlocky action film starring Patrick Swayze, and then comparing it to the newly released 2024 direct-to-streaming remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Which of these movies wins out in the “so bad it’s good” category of unhinged violent action romp about a psychopathic smiling drifter who comes into a small town to clean up the local bar-house with martial arts? Tune in to find out!

Whinging Aloud – Episode 239

This week, it’s a three hour epic! We review the much anticipated Dune: Part Two, Netflix’s deconstructing fairy-tale movie Damsel, Hannah Gadsby’s new standup collab Gender Agenda, the 2nd season of Jon Ronson’s culture war podcast Things Fell Apart, and the first season of the new Mr & Mrs. Smith series. We also talk about a whole bunch of recent trailers, but the biggest chunk of the show is our new section, mostly covering the rollicking shitshow going on in the gaming industry, from continued mass layoffs to the possibility of Gamergate 2.0 (kill me now). I guess reactionary politics is the theme of today.

Whinging Aloud – Episode 238

This week, Sam and I ask and try to answer the question “who is this for?” many times, as we review Drive-Away Dolls, Gunpowder Milkshake, and Netflix’s live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I also give my brief first impressions of Helldivers 2, the game of the moment. We then spend a big chunk of the show talking about some big news items concerning Sony and Microsoft’s place in the gaming industry, the gleefully negative reception to Madame Web, and some other stuff alongside recent trailers.

Whinging Aloud – Episode 237

This week, it’s a three hour epic! We review Michael Mann’s 1995 crime drama Heat, the 80s Arnie sci-fi dystopia action romp The Running Man, the first season of the vulgar animated musical series Hazbin Hotel, the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and the “making of” videogame documentary Grounded II: The Making of The Last of Us Part II. Elsewhere in the show, we cover some trailers from the most recent Sony State of Play and beyond, while Sam talks about the latest headline grabbing behind-the-scenes horror show going on in Pro Wrestling, along with whole bunch of other news stories.

Whinging Aloud – Episode 236

This week, we cover a bunch of grim news items but try to life our spirits with some recent trailers for upcoming games and movies, like Avowed and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Dev Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man, and the Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal. We also review Neil Breen’s 2016 masterpiece Pass Thru, and I talk about the Netflix adaptation of Trent Dalton’s book Boy Swallows Universe, while Sam gives his thoughts on melancholy animated series Carol and the End of the World.

Whinging Aloud – Year in Review 2023

In our first episode of 2024, we spend just over 3 hours looking back at the year of 2023 and more! Sam and I talk about our favorite and least favorite movies, TV shows, videogames, news stories and overall trends from the year that was. We also cover some more recent stuff, with a bunch news items and trailers both bold and new, as well as reviews for Poor Things, Saltburn, Dream Scenario, and Neil Breen’s Double Down. Happy Cursed New Year!

Whinging Aloud – Episode 235

This week, the end of the year is approaching, and we have a crap-tonne of stuff to cover in this 3 hour epic of an episode! Sam and I discuss all the trailer reveals, controversies and winners from the 2023 Game Awards, alongside a bunch of other stuff that caught our attention from the past few weeks. At the end of the show, we also review the 2002 “biographical” comedy drama Catch Me If You Can, the unhinged queer Gen Z comedy Bottoms, the absolutely bonkers Bollywood action thriller Jawan, and the latest Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki animated fantasy film The Boy and the Heron. I also find time to chat about Netflix’s new apocalyptic mystery thriller Leave The World Behind.

Whinging Aloud – Episode 234

This week on the show, we gush about recent animated series like Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Blue Eye Samurai, while also taking the opportunity to shit on the dadcore power fantasy that is Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher. Elsewhere on the episode we cover the top nominated picks for the upcoming 2023 Game Awards, alongside Sam’s half-review of Alan Wake 2 and final thoughts on Baldur’s Gate 3. Other topics include Pro Wrestling’s unkillable problematic fave CM Punk, more Netflix/streaming industry fuckery, and some other stuff probably.

Whinging Aloud – Episode 233

This week on the show, Sam is on his Idris Elba arc as he gives his final thoughts on the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty, along with reviews for 2016 action thriller Bastille Day, the British crime series Luther, and its theatrical followup The Fallen Sun. Meanwhile, I talk about the recent Australian supernatural horror film Talk to Me, as well as the adult animated Netflix series Blue Eye Samurai. We then combine both our white guy powers to talk about the campy drama/slasher prequel movie Pearl, but only after covering some hefty news and trailers, including Blizzcon 2023 and the conclusion of the historic SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood… among other things.
